Pharmaceutical sector in Portugal in 10 Indicators

Portuguese Pharmaceutical Industry sector imports more raw materials and finished products than exports, in 2021 exports were 1 364 Million euro and imports were 3 371 Million euro. Main export Countries were European Union and second USA. Main imports Countries were European Union and second Switzerland.

At 2021 retail sales was responsible for 68% of the total turnover, Whole sale for 27 % and Industry for 5%. This distribution has been almost the same for the last 10 years.

Pharmaceutical Industry is producing 12% of the Pharmaceutical turnover.

The Corporation with more than 20 Years existence are responsible for 64% of the turnover and 44% of the employees of the Pharmaceutical sector.

The Pharmaceutical Turnover in Million euro:

We can see the effect of the 2008 crisis that has always a delay in time to show up in Portugal. Troika time started at 6th April 2011 until May 2014.

Pharmaceutical Turnover mainly reflects the sales of the drug at Pharmacy.

The number of Pharmaceutical Corporations is raising:

At 2021 a total number of 4 158 was achieved.

At Lisbon area is 38 % of the corporations, Porto area with 27 %, Coimbra area with 20% and Algarve with 3.5 % of the corporations.

The number of employees at Pharmaceutical in 2021 was 44 809 employees.

The data of the number of the employees in the Pharmaceutical industry show an increase only stopped during the Troika period:

The retail sales turnover has been increasing with an average above 5% each year, except in the Troika period and in Covid-19 pandemic at the year 2020:

The Wholesale sales turnover has been increasing with an average above 5% each year, except in the Troika period and in Covid-19 pandemic at the year 2020:

The Industry sales turnover has been increasing with an average above 5% before each year Troika period, and in the 2020 reach 15%. In 2021 there was a big decrease possibly due to the raw materials cost raise:

Pharmaceutical EBITDA has an average of 10% of increase each year and has a maximum at 2020, with a value of 30%:

 

  1. PHARMACEUTICAL RETAIL SALE EBITDA VARIATION

The Retail sale EBITDA variation is increasing above 10% after Troika period, except on 2020 mainly due to Covid-19:

  1. PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY (MANUFACTURE) EBITDA VARIATION

The Pharmaceutical Industry EDITDA variation was negative starting with the 2008 crisis. After Troika was instable, positive and negative changes each year. A maximum of 60% increase was at 2020 and a minimum of – 24% in year 2021:

The financial pressure was increasing with the 2008 crisis and during Troika period a strong decrease happen.
