Pharmaceutical industry in Germany : Employees

In 2017, 121,415 people were employed in companies manufacturing pharmaceutical products. The number of employees fell slightly compared to the previous year, as there were
changes in the reporting channels of the Federal Statistical Office. The decline in employment calculated there does not fully reflect the overall situation within the pharmaceutical
industry and the German economy over the last two years.
The still relatively good economic situation in Germany in 2019 has led to a further slight increase in employment this year. In October 2019, around 33.6 million people were employed in the Federal Republic of Germany subject to social insurance contributions.

In 2017, around 5.6 million people were employed in the German healthcare system. This was an increase of 93,000 over the previous year. The number of employees thus increased
by 1.7 %. The increase was particularly strong in the occupations of nursing care for the elderly (+5.1 %). In total, the number of employees has risen by 1.5 million since 2000.
