Israeli Researchers Investigate New CBD Antiviral Treatments for COVID-19

We will begin this article with a huge disclaimer. CBD, in any form, full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, isolate – you name it – are not CBD Antiviral treatments for COVID-19.

None of the content produced on this website is meant to be used as medical, supplemental, or dietary advice. Be aware that this article is examining the research being conducted on treatments that either utilise CBD in preparations that are not available to the public (which have dramatically different properties from the products found on this website) or they leverage CBD in combination with controlled substances that need to be administered by medical professionals.

However, we do find it fascinating that there are studies involving CBD that are playing a role in the race to find an effective treatment to halt this monumentous pandemic. Read on to learn more.

What is the Potential for CBD as Antiviral Treatments?

CBD and coronavirus strains do not have much in common, according to medical research. In fact, there is no research indicating that cannabis, or CBD, will act as antiviral treatments. However, CBD does relate to the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is a crucial component of the physiological systems found in a variety of vertebrates, and invertebrates (including humans, companion animals, and beyond.)

Modulation of mammalian endocannabinoids (chemical signallers produced and used by the body to assist ECS operation) leads to a variety of effects in our physiology. Research suggests that the “administration of endocannabinoids or use of inhibitors of enzymes that break down the endocannabinoids, leads to immunosuppression.” As inflammation is an innate aspect of the immune response, it stands to reason that “manipulation of endocannabinoids in vivo [in living organisms] may constitute a novel treatment modality against inflammatory disorders.”

While CBD may not have a relation to COVID-19, inflammation certainly does. As our readers are most likely aware, one of the most life-threatening factors involved in COVID-19 pathology is the fact that it can lead to pneumonia. Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs, leading to inflammation of the air sacs within the organs. These air sacs can fill with fluid, and pus, leading to a variety of symptoms (fever, cough, difficulty breathing, chills) and may cause fatalities.

This “inflammatory response to infection is necessary for host defence but can contribute to the systemic toxicity and lung injury that may result from pneumonia.” However, “in some settings, adjunctive treatment of lower respiratory infections with anti-inflammatory agents can reduce morbidity.”

We want to stress that existing CBD inflammation studies DO NOT relate to any known treatments for viral infections at this time. While it may also be tempting to go looking for the best terpenes for pain and inflammation, we want to be clear that terpene preparations have not been indicated in the treatment of COVID-19 either.

CBD Loaded Exosomes

An Israeli company, InnoCan that specialises in the creation of cannabinoid preparations, is now working in tandem with Ramot, a branch of Tel Aviv University, to test a fascinating new cannabinoid preparation. Their primary goal is to learn if exosomes carrying CBD, delivered via inhaled technologies, can be useful in treating the lungs of critical COVID-19 patients.

Exosomes are created as stem cells proliferate. These tiny particles target organs that have sustained damage, and they are also crucial cellular communicators. Viruses are known to hack exosomal pathways, releasing exosomes that contain viral factors. These viral factors create an influence over the behaviours of recipient cells, leading to support the pathogenesis of the infection.

These intriguing cellular communicators can play a crucial role in the development of viral infections when they are hijacked. However, when exosomes are operating appropriately, they can encourage a variety of antiviral treatments activities, including the transportation of many antiviral factors to crucial targets.

InnoCan statements indicate that CBD loaded exosomes may provide a synergistic array of exosomal cellular healing and anti-inflammatory properties that may aid in the recovery of infected lungs. This is good news for the many individuals struggling with inflammatory pneumonia due to infections from the novel coronavirus.

Synergistic CBD-Steroid Treatment

On April 19, 2020, another Israel-based company, Stereo Biotechs, announced that they are beginning a clinical trial to test the efficacy of a potential treatment for COVID-19. This treatment is a steroid-based approach that leverages several attributes of CBD to increase the total efficiency of the procedure.

The cycle of treatment lasts for several weeks, not including follow-up activities. The first test was set to include ten patients and was slated to begin in April. While there hasn’t been enough time yet to determine the efficacy of treatment, there is already a plan in place to move into the second phase of trials, if the first phase is successful. This second phase will include 40 trial patients.

Keep in mind that steroid treatment is a standard method used for patients hospitalised with pneumatic symptoms, so while CBD may be beneficial in this procedure, it is not the prominent factor. This first study is meant to discover whether hospitalised patients will even tolerate CBD, so we will place another reminder here, that online or store-bought CBD should never be used to treat any medical condition, including COVID-19.

The Founder & CEO of Stereo Biotechs (David Bassa) stated that they “are hopeful that this study will lead to faster benefit from the growing number of COVID-19 patients in Israel and around the world. “

In Conclusion

The human endocannabinoid system, and as a result, cannabis, CBD, and a variety of cannabinoid preparations, have a unique relationship to our physiological systems. When used with accuracy and research-backed techniques, they can provide a host of vital activities. We are also thrilled to learn about the myriad of ways that these organic compounds are being used, and we hope that these trials will assist in the discovery of a treatment protocol that helps to alleviate the suffering caused by the novel coronavirus.
