CDC reported Thursday that, as of October 15, there have been 1,479 confirmed and probable lung injury cases associated with use of e-cigarette, or vaping, products reported in 49 states (all except Alaska), the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In addition, CDC said there have been 33 related deaths confirmed in 24 states.

The agency said it is also conducting additional laboratory testing. It is currently validating targeted methods to test chemicals in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, blood, or urine and has received initial samples for testing.

CDC is testing pathologic specimens associated with the patients, and is it validating methods for aerosol emission testing of case-associated product samples from e-cigarette, or vaping, products and e-liquids.

The results, CDC said, may offer insight into the nature of the chemical exposure(s) contributing to the outbreak.
