Biotech in Spain: Top Facts




This map of the distribution of biotech companies throughout Spain shows that the country’s most significant biotech clusters are in Catalonia (23.3% of all biotech companies), followed by Madrid (18.7%), Valencia (10%) and the Basque Country (8.8%).


The number of active biotech companies in Spain peaked in 2011 at 660 and stood at 651 as of 2016.


66.8% of the biotech companies in Spain are involved in the area of human health. Some companies have more than one area of application, which makes the total differ from 100%.
