The German Institute for Standardization DIN has published new technical specifications in the field of “Coating materials for wind-turbine rotor blades”.

The ISO Working Group ISO/TC 35/SC 9/WG 32 “Coating materials for wind-turbine rotor blades” has announced the release of a series of technical specifications:

  • ISO/TS 19392-1, Paints and varnishes — Coating systems for wind-turbine rotor blades — Part 1: Minimum requirements and weathering
  • ISO/TS 19392-2, Paints and varnishes — Coating systems for wind-turbine rotor blades — Part 2: Determination and evaluation of resistance to rain erosion using rotating arm
  • ISO/TS 19392-3, Paints and varnishes — Coating systems for wind-turbine rotor blades — Part 3: Determination and evaluation of resistance to rain erosion using water jet

Part 1 describes the minimum requirements after weathering of the coating system. Part 2 describes a method to determine the rain erosion resistance where water droplets hit a rotating specimen. This method is known as rotating arm test (helicopter test). Part 3 of this specification describes another method for rain erosion resistance testing, where a water jet or a series of water jets at defined pressure hits the surface of the specimen. All parts of this International series are intended to be adopted on European level.

Currently two further parts of the series are under development:

  • ISO/PWI TS 19392-4, Paints and varnishes – Coating systems for wind-turbine rotor blades – Part 4: Determination and evaluation of ice adhesion in combination with rain erosion
  • ISO/PWI TS 19392-5, Paints and varnishes – Coating systems for wind-turbine rotor blades – Part 5: UV protective properties of rotor blade coatings/coating systems
