500,000 COMPANY SUCCESSIONS EACH YEAR IN EUROPE
Of a company’s three life stages – creation, growth and succession – only the first two hold the public’s attention on an almost daily basis, through the media. Support for new businesses is on everyone’s lips. Start-up, venture capital, business angels, and private equity: the vocabulary of entrepreneurship is the stuff of dreams. Business transfers, by contrast, attract much less attention. Yet the future of the Swiss and European economy is at stake. SMEs are really the lungs that breathe air into every local economy. More than 75,000 companies were transferred in Switzerland between 2008 and 2013. The number of transfers is continually rising: in Europe, nearly half a million companies change hands each year, and as many jobs are lost through botched successions.
