Companies plan to cultivate 13.7 tons of cannabis in Germany in 2026

In Germany, companies plan to cultivate 13.7 tons of cannabis for medical or scientific purposes this year. The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) reported this amount to the International Centre for Cannabis as Medicines (ICCB) at the end of January , based on company forecasts. Despite repeated inquiries, the BfArM has not yet published the amount of medicinal cannabis produced in Germany in 2025. Companies producing in Germany were required to report the quantities they planned to produce in 2026 to the BfArM by the end of January 2026.

Recently, both Aurora and Demecan announced plans to increase their production volumes in Germany. Demecan told the German Press Agency (dpa) that it had expanded its production capacity to four tons. Aurora did not provide MDR with specific details regarding the extent of its expansion.

Since the Medicinal Cannabis Act (MedCanG) came into force on April 1, 2024, companies have been able to apply for a license to cultivate medicinal cannabis in Germany. Previously, only Aphria (now a subsidiary of Tilray), Aurora, and Demecan were authorized by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) to produce medicinal cannabis in Germany. Prior to this, the three companies were limited to a combined maximum production of 2.6 tons annually in Germany. Following the implementation of the MedCanG, the three companies announced an expansion of their capacities in the summer of 2024. Demecan, in particular, announced an increase to two tons per year.

In October 2024, in addition to the three already licensed companies, four more applied for a license to cultivate cannabis in Germany. German Cannabis Standards has publicly announced a ten million euro financing round for the construction of a 21,000 square meter production facility.

In 2025, more than 200 tons of cannabis were imported into Germany for medical or scientific purposes. Domestic cultivation is estimated to have accounted for approximately five percent of the total available quantity.
