CANABIS: Listagem de Entidades do Circuito da Distribuição e da Produção e Aquisição Direta

Portugal’s medical cannabis sector is shifting gears. After years of a cautious, restrictive approach, regulators are opening the gates to new players and expanded production.
The latest data reveals a significant uptick in active cultivation licenses issued by INFARMED. From just a handful of licensed operators a few years ago, the country has now granted permits to over 30 companies to cultivate cannabis for medical and export purposes. Furthermore, dozens of additional applications are in various stages of review.
Why the Increase?
This expansion isn’t accidental. It’s a strategic move driven by several factors:
Proving the Model: Initial licensed producers demonstrated that Portugal—with its ideal climate, skilled agricultural sector, and political stability—is a competitive, high-quality producer for the European market.
Economic Ambition: Recognizing the booming EU medical cannabis market (projected to be worth billions), Portugal is positioning itself as a leading European export hub, attracting foreign investment and creating skilled jobs.
Supply for Domestic Needs: Increasing cultivation capacity is a prerequisite for finally improving access and affordability for Portuguese medical patients, a long-standing criticism of the early program.
