The Report provides settled pricing data on wholesale cannabis flower, trim, extracts, and genetics. Settled prices are a weighted average of all deals completed in the period and include both spot and forward deals.
As the Canadian adult recreational cannabis market marks its sixth year in October, market participants have endured a lengthy roller coaster ride, driven by an elastic imbalance of supply and demand. Supply shortages and volatile pricing caused stress in the early days of legalization, while market oversupply and average pricing below the cost of production were prevalent from late 2022 through the end of 2023.
Reduced scale and the closure of multiple LP facilities have since largely alleviated market oversupply issues, and more LPs are seeing a path to profitability. Recent figures from Health Canada show that total indoor canopy space fell to 1.39 million square meters in March 2024, 8.0% lower than in March 2023, and a cumulative 37.3% lower than the May 2020 peak of 2.22 million square meters1. Meanwhile, unpackaged inventories of dried cannabis fell 17.3% from 1.25 million kg in March 2023 to 1.03 million kg in March 2024, and were down a cumulative 21.9% from the October 2022 high of 1.32 million kg2.
